Caprice Dennis brought a big smile and her Univ. of Miami team home to play against Oakland Univ. The former Pershing H.S. star looked so happy and at ease to perform in front of family, friends, mentors, former teammates and coaches. After being heavily recruited she landed in Coconut Grove to play for coach Katie Meier and the Hurricanes. Coach Meier has nurtured a family environment for her team, and sophomore SG Dennis is thriving in the Florida sunshine. The game would be her homecoming.
Caprice faced some challenges at home before she moved in with Shawn "Twig" Hill, her coach at Pershing. The move relieved a lot of stress and helped Dennis improve her academic status. She still had to carry the pressure of high expectations throughout her high school career as the team leader when the Doughgirl's program became as significant as the illustrious Doughboys. Also Caprice Dennis has high expectations for herself, and doesn't mind working hard. Ranked as one of the top players in her class, most of the time she wore a focused face of concentration.
Before deciding to attend Miami, Dennis had verbally committed to Kansas the summer prior to her senior year. Evidently she was feeling Katie Meier, her teammates, the school, the weather, and the beaches don't hurt either. The love coach Meier and the team have for each other was on exhibit all night. Caprice's beaming smile says she took the right turn to South Florida.
Lots of family, friends, mentors, former teammates and coaches took advantage of the Lady Canes playing so close to Detroit to see Caprice Dennis. They talked to her during the game, and she couldn't help flashing a smile a few times. Dennis even played a few minutes against her Pershing H.S. teammate Nijzah Hill (coach Shawn Hill's daughter), whose family she had lived with.
The game ended with the Hurricanes on top of the Grizzlies. Caprice had 14pts. The reunion began when she came out of the locker room joined by coach Meier. Hugs and kisses, selfies and group photos, Dennis was delighted to give warm greetings. Everyone was feeling so proud of her that it radiated. She was shining!
