DETROIT's FINEST Desmond King (IOWA) and Jourdan Lewis (UofM) have been chosen as two of the 16 semifinalist for the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in college football. King and Lewis are both junior cornerbacks performing at a high level and contributing to their teams' success this season. They share deep roots in DET's athletic community, playing together in little league and competing in high school.
The Iowa Hawkeyes (8-0, 4-0) coached by Kirk Ferentz are still undefeated this season. The team is on top of the West Division in the BIG TEN and ranked #10 in the country. They are winning with a good running game and a strong defense.
Desmond King has seven interceptions with an 88yd pick-six yesterday vs. Maryland. He leads the BIG TEN and is tied for the interception lead in the NCAA. King also handles kick off and punt returns.
Jim Harbaugh has arrived and revived the Michigan Wolverines (6-2, 3-1) who are ranked #15 in the country. The team's success is clearly rooted on defense. They have three shutouts this season, and a goal line stand at the end of game yesterday vs. Minnesota.
Jourdan Lewis has 15 pass break ups. He also has two interceptions including a pick-six in game vs. Northwestern.
Desmond King played for head coach Rod Oden at DET East English Village H.S. and DET Crockett H.S. where they were city champs in 2011. He played with the DET West Side Cubs for head coach William Tandy in Detroit/PAL. King was also on the Detroit/PAL track team headed by former Olympic Gold Medalist Darnell Hall and coached by Derek Atlas. Atlas was also Desmond's track coach at DET East English Village H.S.
Jourdan Lewis played at DET Cass Tech. for head coach Thomas Wilcher winning state titles in 2011 and 2012. He was a teammate of King's on the DET West Side Cubs. Lewis played basketball at CT coached by David Dixon and for The Family coached by Durand Walker.
